Starting from 1 January 2025, Hungary will introduce mandatory e-invoicing for all non-consumer transactions in the electricity and natural gas sectors, as set out in Government Decree no. 273/2007 on electricity and Decree no. 19/2009 on natural gas. The mandate applies to electricity and natural gas suppliers, traders, distributors and transmission system operators. Non-private entities, such as partnerships, trusts, corporations, and NGOs, are also subject to the mandate.
While the decree allows for flexibility in invoice formats – any form approved by the Hungarian tax authority is permitted – it mandates that e-invoices must be electronically archived in accordance with VAT requirements.
This shift emphasizes the need for compliant digital storage solutions for affected businesses. As the legal deadline approaches, companies are encouraged to review and implement appropriate electronic archiving processes.
