Five key questions about e-Receipt in Egypt

Egypt’s Ministry of Finance first announced and initiated integration of its e-Invoicing system, which covers business-to-business transactions (B2B), in 2020. Full implementation has not been completed yet, and MoF is still in the process of expanding the scope of implementation. After successful implementation of the e-invoicing system, details of the e-Receipt system (for B2C transactions) was published in April 2022. The most common Egypt e-Receipt questions that we have received from our clients, and our answers, can be found below.

1. What is e-Receipt and what are the differences between that and an e-Invoice?

The Egypt Tax Authority (ETA) is preparing a new implementation plan for the e-Receipt system. In contrast to the e-invoice (for business-to-business transactions), the new e-Receipt system comprises business-to-customer transactions. The goal of the new system is to gather, track, and validate goods and services details (sales data). With the electronic integration of POS (point of sale) machines, it will be able to verify transactions.

2. On what date will the e-Receipt become mandatory?

According to the announcement made by the ETA at the beginning of April 2022, the trial phase started on 15th April for the largest taxpayers. The first step of e-Receipt mandate will start in July 2022 for large taxpayers. The timeline is expected to be similar to the e-invoice implementation plan, which is proceeding gradually. Due to the announcement of the head of the tax authority, full implementation will be completed in 2024, including for small companies.

3. What is the e-Receipt format in Egypt?

The e-Receipt must be generated by responsible taxpayers in JSON format. Sample JSON files are published on the ETA website.

4. Will there be a digital signature and QR code for receipts?

The technical details that e-Receipt should contain are as follows:

  • A digital signature
  • UUID (a unique key at system level that is created based on the content of e-Receipt)
  • QR code (used by tax authorities for verification)

5. How does the SNI solution work?

SNI’s Egypt e-Invoicing add-on solution is an end-to-end solution in which  extracting data from SAP, data mapping, processing, and communication with tax authorities will automatically be processed under a single SAP add-on.
