Australia Adopts PINT A-NZ E-Invoicing Specification

Australia has begun the phased adoption of the PINT A-NZ e-invoicing specification, which will replace the Peppol BIS 3.0 standard starting from 15 September 2024. The new format is mandatory for B2G e-invoicing and B2B transactions if e-invoicing is agreed.

The transition includes two key deadlines:

  • By 15 November 2024, invoices, credit notes, and self-bills must comply with the new specification.
  • By 15 May 2025, the BIS 3.0 standard will be fully retired.

Key updates to the PINT specification include revised business process identifiers, a new wildcard document type identifier scheme, and streamlined or eliminated business rules.

To further promote Peppol e-invoicing, the Australian Treasury has committed to giving businesses the right to require their suppliers to use Peppol e-invoicing. This initiative will be implemented over three years, starting with large suppliers (AUD 50 million turnover and above), followed by medium suppliers (AUD 10 million to 50 million turnover) and eventually all suppliers.

The PINT format aligns with practices in Malaysia and Singapore, thereby increasing harmonization across this region. The government aims to streamline procurement processes, reduce administrative burdens and promote the adoption of international e-invoicing standards.
