The UK government has launched a 12-week consultation to explore the potential for the standardization and wider adoption of e-invoicing across businesses and the public sector. This initiative, led by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), aims to understand how different e-invoicing approaches could integrate with business systems.
E-invoicing has been widely adopted in other countries, improving business efficiency, cash flow, and tax reporting accuracy. The UK currently does not have a standardised e-invoicing framework, except for NHS suppliers using the PEPPOL network. By requesting input from businesses of all sizes, industry groups, and individuals, the government intends to develop a strategy that supports both economic growth and tax compliance. The consultation is to remain open until 7 May 2025, and further stakeholder engagement is planned through business forums and industry events.
